Cherry Dump Cake

I forgot all about this "cobbler" until I saw it on Three on Food's Favorite Dessert of 2009! Reason number #128 to have a food blog... you'll never forget and lose your recipes again! I can't tell you how many recipe treasures I have lost along the years that I wish I could get back from previous co-workers and deceased relatives. I wish I would have kept better track of recipes... and of my boys' achievements (I hope Abbott never asks "how old was I when"... because my poor 2nd child's baby book is practically blank)!
This is one recipe I am SO glad to have back! Abbott's kindergarten teacher used to make this dessert for us. Justin said "Wow, this is extremely easy and extraordinarily good", my thoughts exactly! I want to make this again with apple pie filling, OR peach pie filling, OR blueberry pie filling... so many possibilities, I can't decide!

Ingredients
2 cans cherry pie filling
1 package yellow cake mix
1 cup butter (2 sticks)Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. In the prepared dish, layer the cherry pie filling. Then sprinkle the dry cake mix over the top, covering evenly. Slice the butter up and lay it onto the cake mix. Bake 45 to 50 minutes in the preheated oven, until browned and bubbly. Store in the fridge. We love to eat this cold the next day - the crust stays good and crunchy! If you eat it warm it must be served with vanilla ice cream, yummmmmmm!

I love dump cake! I have the ingredients to make it. I'll have to do that soon! Reminds me of all the dump cakes we used to make camping for cub scouts!

This looks absolutely delicious!! I'm also glad to see you have tried the "great value" pie filling and butter. With the huge food price hikes, I've been really tempted to try the great value brand but I haven't talked to anyone who's tried them. Are you happy with them?

Coleen, I LOVE Great Value brand! I used to do this little experiment with my class where they would eat 1 mandarin orange slice from some of the top brands and from Best Choice/Great Value... but I never told them the brands just #1, #2, #3, etc. They always voted the off-brand as their favorite. I used that lesson as part of my money management unit in class, it was fun! You should ABSOLUTELY try Great Value!

Love dump cake! We always made it with a can of drained, crushed pineapple as well. Like Michelle, we made it in day camp only with Girl Scouts rather than Cub Scouts. I remember we always made it in a foil box oven. :)

Just stumbled upon you blog today. I am making this this weekend - but with apple pie filling. I bought apple pie filling with the intention of making apple turnovers on New Years morning - which never happened. I had no idea what to do with the cans of pie filling. Thanks for the idea!

I am laughing soooo hard right now. Thank you Carrie. My hubby teaches adaptive behavior at the HS level..Since school got out he has made like three or four of these. I give him a look and he says leave me alone it is SUMMER. So now I call it summer cake. Then I saw it here and am just having a great time. I love your site!

You can add shredded Coconut on top, I made one with blueberries(canned)and Pineapple. yummy!

Cathy said...

I learned to make this with white cake mix instead of yellow and then adding coconut and pecans on top before drizzling melted butter over the top.

It is one of my husband's favorite desserts I make. He calls it "Cherry's Delight"!

Anonymous said...

Maed this but put chopped pecans on top!!!! :)

My mom used to make this all the time but she added coconut to make it more tropical, thanks for the memorie.

I wonder what would happen if you put the cake mix on the bottom!! I remember a recipe back in the day, where you did that and put the cherries/pineapple/walnuts on top and the cake mix bubbled up around the topping enveloping it and making a crust on top. Then you spoon it out with crust on top and bottom. Yumm! But I'm afraid to try it.

Thank you for the recipe. I lost my original for cherry surprise dessert from church potlucks around 1962! The only thing added was a dash of almond flavoring, and sliced or slivered almonds sprinkled on top. I only found your recipe by typing in the ingredients! I lose my recipes when moving house and when upgrading to new computers, and my recipes won't transfer. I will continue to type them into WORD and see if that helps.

Carrie, I forgot to mention, that I call my own creation "Cherry Surprise" and tell folks the surprise is that there are no cherries!
I use two cans of blueberry pie filling and a small can of crushed pineapple, plus the half a box of cake mix, or one small box of Jiffy cake mix. In my original, we poured the melted butter over the dry cake mix, but I like your idea better. I got so I stirred the melted butter lightly into the dry cake mix on top of the pie filling.

Ingredient list says butter, melted. Directions and pics show sliced. Recipe needs to be clearer.

Can I use a bag of frozen cherries instead of canned? If so should I thaw them first? Thanks
